Killed for 100baht. Guns and Alcohol
Killed for 100baht
Talking to a Westerner today he told me about a Thai customer in a bar on Prachasamran Road who killed a member of staff over a paltry 100baht. I was first told that it was because the young male staff member had tried to overcharge by 100baht (which we can all relate to at one time or another) to which the drunken customer pulled his shooter and dispensed a round in to the young staff member, effectively killing him for no reason what so ever. I was not going to post, until this evening I got some confirmation from a Thai female who told me that the dispute was not about overcharging it was about trying to get the drunken customer to pay for something he had broken which pissed him off so much he killed the lad.
I was not present and have yet to speak to anybody that was but I cannot find a reason why you would shoot somebody over 100baht, a bit of biffo, a scuffle or a very heated exchange sure, thats what beer does but to go out with a loaded weapon and terminate somebody is barbaric. Continue reading
Unpaid loans land students in court
Loans Unpaid
A court official told us today that the government is using the Family Courts to arbitrate with students who have not repaid their student loans. Khon Kaen Family Court has set aside 9 days to hear all the the outstanding debt cases. Today, Sunday, was a quiet day…only 80 cases to wade through. On avearge there has been more than 100 cases per day and they have not yet finished.
Its a sensible approach to use the Family Court in a non agressive manner to secure repayment on non performing loans. A couple of things strike me here when it was made known to me that some students were claiming that they did not know they had to repay the loan and that every westerner should think very seriously about lending money in Thailand to anybody and that includes expats.
We have heard horror stories of farangs getting into the money lending game and loosing over a million baht after being ripped offf by another farang. I have had people from the village knocking on my door and asking to borrow 300,000 baht and they would let me keep the pick up as security. The fact that it was a heap was irrelevant because they owed 6 months on it and the repo guys were after it. I asked for them to transfer their land into my wifes name and off they shot. Truth is repayment is something that most Thais do not understand the importance of and you maybe a lifetime getting your money back, the intention is there to pay but other committments take precedence and your bill gets put to the bottom of the in tray.
Digressing from the original news item made forget to say that this event is not unique to Khon Kaen it is happening in every courthouse in every major city in Thailand. Yo.u do the maths
Are there too many Hotels in Khon Kaen?
Noodle Shop Mentality
Living in Khon Kaen it is not difficult to witness the ‘noodle shop mentality’ . The noodle shop mentality is a business practice that refers to people who copy successful businesses in the hope of also being successful.
Most noticeable amongst food vendors who see somebody making a decent living from selling a particular product, then several other vendors set up in close proximity selling exactly the same product effectively killing the chances of anybody making good money. This behaviour is not reserved for the less fortunate and you can see the extremely wealthy business community demonstrating the same traits.
One builds shophouses and hundreds more build shophouses, one builds condos and ten more build condos, one has a successful hotel so 30 more build hotels. Which leads me to ask the question…Are there too many hotels in Khon Kaen? Continue reading
The train now arriving at……….
Train Depot at Thapra
The new high speed train link between Bangkok and Nong Khai has had a lot of coverage in the national media in recent months. Cynics amongst us would be inclined to think that talking about things in Thailand is just that…talk and nothing ever goes any further. Continue reading
